Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable chemical commonly found in:
- Processed-wood products (particleboard, plywood)
- Furniture and cabinetry
- Carpets and wood flooring adhesives
- Insulation materials
- Permanent-press fabrics
Why is it dangerous?
Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen. Long-term exposure, especially in enclosed indoor environments, can pose serious health risks.
Concerns around formaldehyde in imported materials—especially flooring—have increased since the exposé on Lumber Liquidators’ Chinese-made laminate floors. However, these risks can also exist in other brands and materials.
The safest step is testing.
